Doha
Pavan Tanay Sankat Haran, Mangal Murati Roop.
Ram Lakhan Sita Sahit, Hridaye Basahu Sur Bhoop.
Before starting the main hymn, Tulsidas cleanses his mind to paint the glory of Lord Rama.
Shri Guru Charan Saroj Raj, Nij Manu Mukuru Sudhari |
Baranau Raghubar Bimal Jasu, Jo Dayaku Phala Chari ||
Translation: Cleaning the mirror of my mind with the dust from the lotus feet of my Guru, I describe the pure glory of Lord Rama (Raghubar), which bestows the four fruits of life (Dharma, Artha, Kama, Moksha).
Deep Meaning: You cannot see the truth if your mind is dirty. Just as dust on a mirror blurs the reflection, ego and ignorance blur our soul. The “Dust of the Guru’s Feet” symbolizes humility. Only with humility can we begin this prayer.
Buddhi Heen Tanu Janike, Sumirow Pavan Kumar |
Bal Buddhi Vidya Dehu Mohi, Harahu Kalesh Bikar ||
Translation: Knowing myself to be ignorant (lacking intelligence), I invoke you, O Son of Wind (Pavan Kumar). Grant me strength, intelligence, and wisdom, and remove my afflictions and impurities.
Deep Meaning: This is an admission of vulnerability. We are asking Hanuman not just for physical strength (Bal), but for the wisdom (Buddhi) to use it correctly. Kalesh refers to the 5 mental poisons (Ignorance, Ego, Attachment, Aversion, Fear).
The 40 Chaupais (Verses)
Verses 1-5: The Glory of Hanuman’s Form
1. Jai Hanuman Gyan Gun Sagar |
Jai Kapis Tihun Lok Ujagar ||
Meaning: Victory to Hanuman, the ocean of knowledge and virtue. Victory to the Lord of Vanara, who illuminates the three worlds (Earth, Heaven, Netherworld).
2. Ram Doot Atulit Bal Dhama |
Anjani Putra Pavan Sut Nama ||
Meaning: You are the messenger of Rama, the abode of immeasurable strength. You are known as the son of Anjani and the son of the Wind God.
3. Mahabir Bikram Bajrangi |
Kumati Nivar Sumati Ke Sangi ||
Meaning: You are the great hero, valiant and possessing a body like a thunderbolt (Vajra). You dispel evil thoughts (Kumati) and are the companion of good sense (Sumati).
Secret: “Bajrangi” literally means one whose body frame is as hard as a diamond (Vajra). Spiritually, it means having an unbreakable will.
4. Kanchan Baran Biraj Subesa |
Kanan Kundal Kunchit Kesa ||
Meaning: Your complexion is golden (Kanchan), and you are beautifully attired. You wear ear-rings (Kundal) and have curly hair.
5. Hath Vajra Aur Dhvaja Biraje |
Kandhe Moonj Janeu Saje ||
Meaning: You hold the thunderbolt and the flag in your hands. The sacred thread (Janeu) made of Moonj grass adorns your shoulder.
Verses 6-10: His Divine Origin & Wisdom
6. Shankar Suvan Kesari Nandan |
Tej Pratap Maha Jag Vandan ||
Meaning: You are the incarnation of Shiva (Shankar Suvan) and the son of Kesari. Your glory and radiance are worshipped by the whole world.
Secret: Hanuman is considered the 11th Rudra avatar of Shiva. This explains his immense yogic powers.
7. Vidyavan Guni Ati Chatur |
Ram Kaj Karibe Ko Aatur ||
Meaning: You are learned, virtuous, and extremely clever. You are always eager to do Lord Rama’s work.
Secret: Chatur (Clever) here doesn’t mean cunning; it means “resourceful.” Hanuman never makes excuses; he finds solutions.
8. Prabhu Charitra Sunibe Ko Rasiya |
Ram Lakhan Sita Man Basiya ||
Meaning: You delight in listening to the acts of the Lord. Rama, Lakshmana, and Sita reside in your heart.
9. Sukshma Roop Dhari Siyahi Dikhava |
Vikat Roop Dhari Lanka Jarava ||
Meaning: You assumed a tiny (Sukshma) form to appear before Sita, and a terrifying (Vikat) form to burn Lanka.
Secret: This describes the Ashta Siddhis (8 Yogic Powers). Hanuman can become smaller than an atom (Anima) or larger than a mountain (Mahima) at will.
10. Bhima Roop Dhari Asur Sanhare |
Ramachandra Ke Kaj Sanvare ||
Meaning: Taking a massive (Bhima) form, you destroyed the demons and completed Lord Rama’s mission.
Verses 11-20: The Savior of Lakshmana & Servant of Rama
11. Laye Sanjivan Lakhan Jiyaye |
Shri Raghubir Harashi Ur Laye ||
Meaning: You brought the Sanjivani herb and revived Lakshmana. Lord Rama embraced you with a heart full of joy.
12. Raghupati Kinhi Bahut Badai |
Tum Mam Priya Bharat Hi Sam Bhai ||
Meaning: Rama praised you greatly, saying, “You are as dear to me as my brother Bharat.”
Secret: This is the highest compliment. Bharat was the ideal brother; comparing a servant (Hanuman) to a brother broke all social hierarchies.
13. Sahas Badan Tumharo Yash Gaave |
As Kahi Shripati Kanth Lagave ||
Meaning: “The thousand-headed serpent (Sheshnag) sings your glory”—saying this, the Lord of Lakshmi (Rama) embraced you.

Narad Sarad Sahit Aheesa ||
Meaning: Sanaka, Brahma, and other sages, along with Narada, Saraswati, and the King of Serpents…
15. Jam Kuber Digpal Jahan Te |
Kavi Kovid Kahi Sake Kahan Te ||
Meaning: …Yama (Death), Kubera (Wealth), and the Digpalas (Guardians of directions)—none can fully describe your glory. How can mere poets do it?
16. Tum Upkar Sugreevahi Kinha |
Ram Milaye Rajpad Dinha ||
Meaning: You did a great favor to Sugriva by introducing him to Rama and regaining his kingdom.
17. Tumharo Mantra Vibhishan Mana |
Lankeshwar Bhaye Sab Jag Jana ||
Meaning: Vibhishana heeded your advice and became the King of Lanka. The whole world knows this.
Secret: This emphasizes Hanuman as a Guru (Political Advisor). He guided Vibhishana to choose Dharma over family loyalty.
18. Yug Sahastra Yojan Par Bhanu |
Leelyo Tahi Madhur Phal Janu ||
Meaning: You swallowed the Sun, which is thousands of miles away, thinking it to be a sweet fruit.
Scientific Note: This verse famously encodes the distance between Earth and Sun (Yug x Sahastra x Yojan), which matches modern astronomical calculations.
19. Prabhu Mudrika Meli Mukh Mahi |
Jaladhi Langhi Gaye Acharaj Nahi ||
Meaning: Holding the Lord’s ring in your mouth, you crossed the ocean. This is no surprise (given your power).
20. Durgam Kaj Jagat Ke Jete |
Sugam Anugraha Tumhare Tete ||
Meaning: All the difficult tasks in the world become easy with your grace.
Application: Chant this line when facing an “Impossible” deadline or problem.
Verses 21-30: The Guardian & Healer
21. Ram Duare Tum Rakhvare |
Hot Na Agya Binu Paisare ||
Meaning: You are the gatekeeper of Rama’s court. No one can enter without your permission.
22. Sab Sukh Lahai Tumhari Sarna |
Tum Rakshak Kahu Ko Darna ||

Secret: This is the ultimate line for anxiety relief. It surrenders the burden of safety to a higher power.
23. Aapan Tej Samharo Aapai |
Teenon Lok Hank Te Kanpai ||
Meaning: Only you can control your own speed/energy. The three worlds tremble at your roar.
24. Bhoot Pishach Nikat Nahi Aavai |

Meaning: All diseases and pains are destroyed by constantly chanting the name of brave Hanuman.

Man Kram Bachan Dhyan Jo Lavai ||
Meaning: Hanuman liberates those from crisis who meditate on him in thought, word, and deed.
27. Sab Par Ram Tapasvi Raja |
Tin Ke Kaj Sakal Tum Saja ||
Meaning: Rama is the supreme ascetic King. You executed all his tasks perfectly.
28. Aur Manorath Jo Koi Lavai |
Soi Amit Jivan Phal Pavai ||
Meaning: Whoever brings any desire to you attains the limitless fruit of life.
29. Charon Yug Pratap Tumhara |
Hai Parsidh Jagat Ujiyara ||
Meaning: Your glory spans all four ages (Satyuga, Treta, Dvapara, Kaliyuga). Your fame illuminates the world.
Secret: Hanuman is a Chiranjeevi (Immortal). He is present in every age.
30. Sadhu Sant Ke Tum Rakhvare |

Janam Janam Ke Dukh Bisravai ||
Meaning: Through your worship, one attains Rama and forgets the sorrows of many lifetimes.
34. Anta Kaal Raghubar Pur Jai |
Jahan Janma Hari Bhakta Kahai ||
Meaning: At the end of life, the devotee goes to Rama’s abode. Even if reborn, they will be known as a devotee of God.
35. Aur Devta Chitt Na Dharai |
Hanumat Sei Sarva Sukh Karai ||
Meaning: One needs no other deity in their heart; serving Hanuman brings all happiness.
Secret: This shows focus. Since Hanuman controls all planets (Shani, Rahu, Mars), worshipping him alone fixes the entire horoscope.
36. Sankat Kate Mite Sab Peera |
Jo Sumirai Hanumat Balbeera ||
Meaning: All crises are cut, and all pain is erased for those who remember the mighty Hanuman.
37. Jai Jai Jai Hanuman Gosain |

The Concluding Doha
Pavan Tanay Sankat Haran, Mangal Murti Roop |
Ram Lakhan Sita Sahit, Hridaya Basahu Sur Bhoop ||
Translation: O Son of Wind, Destroyer of Sorrows, Embodiment of Auspiciousness. O King of Gods, please reside in my heart along with Rama, Lakshmana, and Sita.
A Final Note:
The Hanuman Chalisa is a journey from “I am weak” (Intro) to “I am fearless” (Verse 22) to “I am free” (Verse 38). Chant it with understanding, and watch the transformation in your life.

Benefits of Chanting Hanuman Chalisa
Chanting these 40 verses is not just a ritual; it is a way to align your energy with cosmic strength. Here are the scientifically observed and spiritual benefits:
1. Removes Fear and Anxiety
The verse “Bhoot Pishach Nikat Nahi Aave” acts as a psychological anchor. Chanting it removes subconscious fears, nightmares, and anxiety. It instills immense confidence in the chanter.
2. Protection from Saturn (Sade Sati)
In Vedic Astrology, Lord Hanuman is the only deity who controls Shani Dev (Saturn). If you are going through Sade Sati, Dhaiya, or a difficult Saturn Mahadasha, reciting the Chalisa 7 times on Saturdays reduces the malefic effects instantly.
3. Health and Healing
The line “Nase Rog Hare Sab Peera” is a powerful affirmation for health. Regular chanting is believed to boost immunity and help in recovery from chronic illnesses.
4. Spiritual Focus
It improves concentration. Students who chant the Chalisa before studying often find they can retain information better (due to the blessing of “Vidyavan Guni Ati Chatur”).
How to Chant Correctly
- Time: The best time is Brahma Muhurta (4 AM – 6 AM) or at Sunset.
- Day: Tuesdays and Saturdays are dedicated to Lord Hanuman.
- Direction: Face East for wisdom or North for prosperity.
- Cleanliness: Always take a bath before touching the holy text.
- Offering: You can offer red flowers, Boondi Laddu, or simply water.
Conclusion
The Hanuman Chalisa is a timeless gift to humanity. It does not matter which language you read it in—Hindi, Telugu, or English. What matters is the Bhav (Emotion) and Bhakti (Devotion) in your heart.
May Lord Hanuman bless you with Strength, Wisdom, and Peace.
Jai Shri Ram!
